OK, this isn’t really a first drive. Or even a second one. In fact, car people have been flogging the 2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe all over the world for a while now. Korea, California, even Las Vegas have played host to intrepid journalists getting a look at the small sports car that in many ways is creating its own niche.

But if the Genesis coupe is on your shopping list of potential summer pick-ups, you probably can't get enough of this car. So here is yet another take. And it’s a realistic one. We drove the sporty two-door over winding rural roads in Michigan, in the open areas about 30 miles west of Detroit. And we spent some time on real, ordinary roads in midsize communities, driving normally.

So no track time. But this experience was pretty close to how you will drive this car, should you choose it to grace your driveway. It’s definitely a peppy option. The all-aluminum turbo four-cylinder is rated at 210 hp and 223 lb-ft of torque, and when paired with the Hyundai-crafted six-speed manual, it offers fun, affordable transportation with plenty of style and interaction.

Our four-banger had the track pack; that means 19-inch wheels, summer tires, bright red Brembos and a stiffer chassis, among other goodies. You will notice the difference. The track pack adds an edge that the V6 touring model we later tried simply didn’t have. Yes, that V6 was an automatic, but the track pack's flair is omnipresent. The turbo is a solid motor, and reaching 60 mph takes little effort under normal circumstances.

Our V6 was comfortably appointed and still plenty of fun with the six-speed ZF automatic transmission. Shifts are quick, and enthusiasts can play Schumacher with the quirky paddles or bump through the gears with the center shifter. With the nice interior finishings, pleasing materials and solid layout, this is probably the closest comparison that can be drawn to the big-brother (and Car of the Year) Genesis sedan. They share the same 3.8-liter V6, but the coupe gets a slight power boost to 306 hp, versus the four-door's 290 hp.

But beyond a few underpinning swaps, and of course the name, these siblings are very much different in their drive character. The V6's bolstered output really shines through in the coupe, and it's a lot of power for a smaller car. Punch off the traction control and you'll see that firsthand.

The V6's power also was evident when teamed with the manual transmission, which is a very enjoyable pairing. Building the revs on the expressway and whipping through the gears is flat-out fun.

All of the models we tested handled the winding route well. They were civilized, maintained composure through turns and absorbed the occasional bumps well. The stiffer track pack offered some chatters on a couple of rough spots, but that's to be expected.

Some have said that the Genesis coupe could join the pony-car stable. But it's really not in that category--for good or bad. The lithe Ford Mustang offers some parallels in terms of handling, but the Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger are far brawnier road-goers. Some will want that. And the styling of the Hyundai, with its "Z" beltline and wedge headlights, is much different than the eye-catching retro looks of the Detroiters.

Speaking of Zs, Nissan's 370 is a decent comparison, but like the American coupes, it has its own rich tradition. The Mazda RX-8 is more athletic than the Genesis, but also is a suitable measuring stick.

Overall, the Genesis coupe looks like a solid commuter car for those looking to spice up their daily drives. It's enjoyable but usable. You can park it. You can maneuver it. There's room to put (some) stuff in it. And for a starting price of $22,750 with freight, this is within reach for a lot of people. Spruce it up and you pay $31,750 for a fully loaded model, but it's still a decent value.

Hyundai execs have said they considered making the Genesis its own line, but ultimately decided against it. The sedan, and now the coupe, are much different from the rest of the company's offerings. They may not stand on their own--yet. But with two potential winners in a year, Genesis is clearly the beginning of something special for Hyundai.

The 2009 Ford Focus RS packs 301 hp.

The first corner you exit flat-out in the new Ford Focus RS signals that this is a very special car. Instead of the expected lengthy squeal of rubber and a pile of wheelspin, there's a chirp from the front and a squirm in the driver's hand, and the RS rockets toward the next corner, hardly missing a beat.

With 301 hp pulsating through the front wheels, this is a special engineering feat--and a win for Ford's new secret weapon, the "RevoKnuckle." Essentially a new front-strut design, it has a free-floating hub that aligns the steering axis with the center of the tire contact area, a change that just about nullifies torque steer.

By getting torque steer under control, Ford doesn't need a snatchy limited-slip diff--which dangerously corrupted the behavior of the previous Focus RS--and it results in civilized behavior, considering the snarling performance of the 2.5-liter turbo-charged five-cylinder.

The 0-to-62-mph time doesn't look that quick on paper at 5.9 seconds, but the RS's strong point is straight-shortening midrange urge. Crack open the throttle on the move, and the RS rockets forward, accompanied by an offbeat five-cylinder warble that's faintly confusing if you're a rally head, because that's the noise a rally Audi is meant to make.

Of course, the RS has another trick up its sleeve: a beautifully poised and compliant chassis. This is no filling-loosening ride--firm, yes, but absolutely everyday livable. In this regard, the RS ups the Blue Oval's peerless reputation for chassis integrity another notch.

There's just one fault with the RS: The driver's bucket seat is set far too high. You get used to it, but it would be far more in tune with the RS's competition heritage to sit about two inches lower.

The RS is on sale only in Europe now, but rumors abound about it coming to the United States, particularly since the car's architect, Jost Capito, now has a desk in Detroit as Ford's global performance-car boss. We can only hope.

It's more likely, though, that the next-generation Focus, due next year, will be the basis for a global Focus RS in a handful of years--a bit of a wait but well worth the anticipation.

He put out five different radio spots on the airwaves recently, and some of the content from the ads are getting some attention.By Don LoganaSAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - They don't call it a bailout, but the big three could be getting a big loan.One prominent local car dealer is fuming and took his frustrations to the radio airwaves.It's causing some controversy. The man in the middle: OC Welch. Welch says business is picking back up, but he's not expecting his new ads to make any new customers.Saturday, five radio spots began running. One is titled, "Wake Up America." "One thing I wanna ask you, with those Japanese cars. Even when they are brand new, how come they don't smell like a new car? They are rice ready, not road ready," Welch says in the commercial."I don't think it's going too far. It's reality and I think we need a reality check," Welch told WTOC today.Welch has no apologies for his latest radio ads. "Right now, it's running a 96 percent approval rate," he said.He says December sales have finally improved. "Past months have been horrible. It's been a horrible year," Welch said.If his radio commercials are any indication, OC's still in a bad mood."All you people who buy Toyota and send your money to Japan. When you don't have a job and can't make a payment, don't come crying to me," Welch says in, "Wake Up America.""I'm just really sick of our government, what is happening in Washington," Welch said.Of the five new commercials running through the end of the year, two of them focus on selling 200 more vehicles for a "Big Check" from Ford. Another offers "Three Things" the government can do to really help the auto industry."I think the government should have tax incentives for people to go out and spend money, whether at a mall or car dealership," Welch said.He says of the big three, Ford is doing the best. His ad, "Cigar Box," even says so."You call me up. You know who this is. I'll be your huckleberry. No big deal," Welch says in the ad.However, the big three are still calling on Washington for help. Today, Congressman Jack Kingston told WTOC help is on the way."It will probably be a $15 billion loan, a bridge loan, to get them to the next year and then take another look at it," Kingston said."It's not going to make people buy cars," Welch said. "Until people have a reason to buy vehicles that's just a band-aid."Welch says the loan wouldn't have saved any car dealerships and won't stop more from closing. "If we don't order vehicles, it's not going to help. Until we can start selling vehicles, then there is no need to order anymore," he says. His radio ads however, will continue to run. Welch even welcomes negative responses to them. "That's fine with me. I'll help them write it. Mail it in. Whatever," he said.As long as he gets his message across."When will you Wal-mart shoppers, you import buyers, when are you gonna wake up and do something for the United States of America," Welch asks in "Wake Up America.""It's a little bit out there, but we are at a point where we need to be out there. This is a great time to be in the market for a luxury convertible.

In the next few weeks, Lexus will introduce its new IS C retractable hardtop convertible in 250 or 350 engine configurations. The new models will compete in a segment that's getting downright crowded. Primary competitors are the BMW 3-series and the Mercedes C-class convertibles, Lexus says. But there also are droptops from Infiniti in the G37, Volvo's C70, the Audi A4 and A5 and the Saab 9-3, just to name a few. It's a buyers market, for slightly wealthier buyers, anyway.

Lexus spent three and a half years making sure that the new IS C will be solid over bumps and potholes. Engineers were not able to start work on the convertible before the current-model hardtop sedan debuted in 2005, so they had to work with what previous teams built.

"Transforming from sedan to convertible is very difficult," chief engineer Junichi Furuyama said. "[The goal was to] keep the body rigidity and the agile feeling of the car."

There is always a tradeoff between adding structural stiffeners and keeping the car light. Total reinforcements to the IS body added 360 pounds to 380 pounds to the various convertible models. The rocker panels are 50 percent bigger in cross section than the hardtop IS and there is a latticework of reinforcement underneath the car. An extra tube is welded inside the reclined windshield frame, and the area behind the rear seats also gets more steel.

Over a few moderate bumps, we could feel some shimmy, as in any structure missing its upper half, but the reverberations were quickly damped out by the stiffer body. Handling was well above what a convertible buyer will expect. It is comfortably fast.

Off the line our 3,880-pound 350C was almost as quick as its lighter sedan counterpart. We drove a 3.5-liter V6-powered IS 350C automatic with 306 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. Lexus lists 0-60 at 5.8 seconds, versus 5.2 seconds for the hard top.

We don't doubt that relatively quick time in the least. You touch the throttle and it leaps forward, reminding us what we like about the whole IS line of performance sedans and coupes. The jump was so pronounced that it took a few runs to get used to launching with any smoothness.

The IS 250C comes with the same V6 configuration but a liter less displacement. Power peaks at 205 hp with torque at 185 lb-ft.

When you add the windblocker over the rear seats, it raises the air flow over the cabin by almost 3 inches--enough to maintain that fabulous hairstyle you spent so long sculpting.

Raising or lowering the top takes just 20 seconds. There are 15 electric motors in the assembly controlled by 37 sensors. By allowing the motions of the motors to overlap where possible, Furuyama estimates they saved 10 seconds in total top operation time, which could be critical at a stoplight. To ease the work of the electric motors, the top sections are made of lightweight aluminum.
