66.4 miles per gallon! Nobody believes me, but if you have a really light foot, you can keep the gas engine off as long as possible under 42 miles per hour. If the road is flat and you keep a steady speed, you're just cruising silently on electric power! You can hear birds chirping, streams running, waves crashing, people talking - all things you couldn't possibly hear in a regular car with the windows down at side street speeds. This particularly beautiful stretch of road had everything - beautiful sights along the way, beautiful weather and flat surfaces! What a dream it was. I usually average 55 miles per gallon average however. That includes city and highway. The Toyota Prius lives up to the hype. Save $1,000 a year in gas if you go from an average car getting 20 mpg and drive 15,000 miles per year. The money saved goes up as gas prices go up. And remember, the Prius is roomier and has a better made interior than other cars that are the same size outside. So this car really compares to mid size cars when you think about it. For $22,000 it's pretty good. NOTE: You'll only get 45 miles per gallon if you don't watch how you accelerate to keep the gas off as long as possible and if you leave the heat/AC on all the time. The "minutes" shows average mileage done at that time. So the column in between 15 and 10 means that 15 minutes ago, the car averaged about 80 miles per gallon. It falls off after 30 minutes and is constantly replaced with the newest 5 minute chunk of driving. "current" means what you're getting right now, not averaged into a 5 minute chunk. All this info encourages you to see how light you can hold the gas pedal to keep it in electric mode as long as possible for max number of free miles while coasting along. It's better than a video game because you don't have to look at the screen, but it is just as engaging. The little "cars" mean during that block of time 50 "watt hours" of electricity from regenerative braking or coasting (downward slopes) was created to recharge the batteries without using the gas engine. The "reset" button is good to press when you refuel so you'll know exactly what you're doing on that tank and you can see how many miles you've gone on that tank before having to refuel. It's a constant reward to drive this car. With a light foot, you can get 600-700 miles on a 12 gallon tank (55-60 mpg). With a regular foot, you'll get about 500-550 which is about 45-50 mpg. The "energy" button changes the screen you are looking at the more familiar one people have seen that shows arrows from the engine and regenerative brakes going to the battery when it's recharging or arrows from the battery to the wheels when it's just silently cruising on electricity.
