Nissan's Qazana small crossover concept is likely best summed up in this way--urban dune buggy.

Don't believe us? Here's what Atsushi Maeda, studio chief for Nissan Design Europe, says:

"The Qazana concept is an intelligent, all-wheel-drive crossover which is masculine, agile, lean, and designed for the tough city streets. Our team at Nissan Design Europe in London realized this image with the motif of a modern-day beach buggy and four-seat motorbike.

Buried behind the Qazana's massive 20-inch wheels and fenders are hints of a new, small crossover Nissan plans to build at its Sunderland plant in Britain.

The lack of exterior door handles makes it easy to mistake this concept for a two-door. But it's a four-door, with rear-hinged back doors that open only after the front doors are open--similar to pickups with rear-access doors. This system allowed Nissan designers to eliminate the B-pillar and open up space to make getting into the rear seats easier.

The Qazana measures 159.8 inches long, barely larger than a Nissan Cube. The face is dominated to two large headlights in the lower part of the fascia, while small lights mounted on the top edge of the fenders serve as daytime running lights.

The interior is finished in a combination of cloth and exposed plastic. Nissan says the shape of the center console was inspired by the design of motorcycle fuel tanks.

A large touch screen dominates the center of the instrument panel.
